Let us ask the uncomfortable question: if you lost all your source code tonight but kept a perfect specification of what your product does - features, business rules, acceptance criteria, decisions and their reasons - how long would it take to rebuild it in the age of AI? Three years ago the answer was "years". Today it is measured in weeks. And that shift changes everything about what actually holds value.
Because the reverse is just as true. If you kept all the code but lost the specification - the why behind every choice, the trade-offs, the edge cases settled in a meeting eight months ago - you would keep an asset that loses value with every change. That is, incidentally, the situation of most teams: the code is the only truth, and that truth is unreadable.
Code moves to the consumables side
This reversal is not a vendor's provocation. It is the direct consequence of what AI makes possible. A properly framed agentic model writes, tests and rewrites code faster than any team. Code becomes regenerable - and what is cheaply regenerable mechanically stops being the scarce asset. The scarce asset is what does not regenerate on its own: precise knowledge of what the product must do, for whom, under which constraints, and why you decided this way rather than that.
In other words, value moves up a level. It leaves the execution artefact (the code) and settles in the intent artefact (the spec). It is a movement we see everywhere - from spec-driven development's "source of truth" to "context as infrastructure" - and one we set out as Survol's founding principle on day one: the approved spec is not paperwork upstream of the real work, it is the work.
You recognise an asset by three signs: it gains value over time, it transfers without its author, and losing it hurts. A well-kept specification ticks all three. A pile of throwaway prompts ticks none. The difference between them is not the content - it is the treatment.
An asset almost nobody treats as one
Here is the paradox. Everyone now agrees the spec is central - but in practice it is still treated as a draft. It lives in a closed ticket, a discussion thread, a document nobody reopens, the memory of a lead who will leave one day. It is not versioned. Nobody knows which decision changed it, when, or why. Nobody can say which version of the product embodies which version of the intent. In short: we proclaim it is the asset, and we file it like waste.
An asset gets accounted for, maintained, audited. Applied to the specification, that means four concrete things - and each of them is a Survol feature.

Treating the spec as an asset is not documentary window dressing. It shows up on the balance sheet:
- Debt moves, and becomes repairable. The real debt of the agentic era is not in the code (regenerable) but in lost intent. A living spec cancels that debt.
- Dependency on individuals drops. Knowledge is no longer in a head that may resign; it is written, located, readable - by a new joiner as much as by a new agent.
- Reversibility becomes real. Changing AI model, changing host, even regenerating part of the code: doable without drama, because the asset - the intent - stays intact and belongs to you. That is our "zero lock-in" promise, taken seriously.
- Value becomes measurable. Every token, every version attaches to the feature shipped. Execution spending is finally connected to the asset it serves.
